Here is our weekly guest post by Paul Hess of www.primalrejuvenation.com. Enjoy!
Raw unheated dairy products are some of the most healing foods on the planet: milk, butter, cream, cheese, whey protein, kefir, yogurt, and colostrum.
These products have been used for thousands of years by people whose survival depended on it.
Raw milk diets have been used therapeutically since the ancient Greeks at least
Even American doctors one hundred years ago put people on month long raw milk diets in sanitarium type hospitals to treat a wide variety of conditions.
Pasteurized diary that is heated before you buy it is some of the most allergenic food, especially the milk, less so the butter. Many people feel better immediately eliminating heated dairy.
Pasteurization is the main reason people are allergic to diary, but some are also allergic to some forms of raw dairy for a variety of reasons that can sometimes be corrected.
Let’s look at the different components of dairy allergies or intolerance and uses of raw dairy for health.
DAIRY ALLERGY AND INTOLERANCE
Heat destroys enzymes needed to help digest dairy and many of the nutrients. Harmful heat is any level much over the animal’s body temperature. Damaged dairy is more likely to become a toxin the body can’t handle and has lost many of its nutritious, anti-oxidant and immune properties.
Heat destroys the enzyme lactase which helps digest the sugar lactase in the milk. If you cannot digest it then it can be become a toxin and seen by your immune system as a foreign invader that needs to be fought.
Even more allergenic is the protein casein in the A1 form, mainly in North America. Goats do not have this kind of casein protein, which is why many people tolerate goat milk better. The healthier form, A2, is found in human, camel, buffalo, goat and sheep milk. A1 releases a peptide that is possibly linked to Type1 diabetes, heart disease, leaky gut, intestinal bloating, and moodiness, according to some milk drinkers
Butter has all but traces of sugars and proteins removed so much less reactive. Ghee is highly purified butter with those traces of protein and sugar removed so it the least allergenic. But it has no enzymes left to maximize use of its fat. Nevertheless, it is considered a potent healing food in traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda.
Yogurt in the store is fermented pasteurized milk. The bacteria have broken down the sugars and proteins to make them easier to digest, so more people will tolerate this. However, there are veryfew active bacteria left because the containers are sealed air tight. If they were alive the plastic containers would show more signs of being under pressure.
It’s possible to have a general intolerance to dairy because the immune system no longer can identify which parts both it so it reacts to any form. This can also be emotionally based through childhood experiences in which family problems are associated with dairy. These can sometimes be cleared through energetic healing techniques.
NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY INTOLERANCES
The ability of a body to absorb nutrients depends on other nutrients to help with digestion and assimilation.
One cause of dairy allergy can be potassium deficiency, which can be caused by a lack of potassium intake or another nutrient deficiency causing lack of utilizing potassium. Potassium needs to be balanced with sodium and magnesium. Sodium and potassium work together to help enable nutrients to get through the cell membrane and to eliminate waste to make room for more nutrients.
Another reason for dairy intolerance is intolerance to the mineral sulfur, which is in many foods like chicken and onions, creating a very large dietary limitation. This can be due to a deficiency of the mineral molybdenum. Taking a molybdenum supplement can work it some cases. Some people have some genetic damage (that can be reversed) as is part of a wider problem with requires many metabolic pathways to be repaired through broad spectrum nutrition and detoxification and, or, infection that is the root cause.
Raw milk is one of the most complete foods, as it is the sole food for baby mammals. It probably lacks vitamin D, as it assumed that the baby can get that from sunshine. (Whereas eggs, the other complete food, have more D, being out of the sun.)
Highly beneficial is simply the fat, the butter, with cream being half fat and half milk.
Fat is a source of fuel, protects against toxins, and is necessary to absorb many minerals and vitamins like beta carotene from vegetables.
Milk fat has cholesterol, one of our most important nutrients, used to make steroidal hormones like sex and adrenal hormones. Cell membranes and skin require cholesterol. The brain is made with a lot of cholesterol. Cholesterol is helps repair damaged tissues. Oxidated cholesterol in arteries is the result of cholesterol being used to neutralized toxins, free radicals that “oxidize,” although that is often the wrong term. Cholesterol has been compared to firemen: correlation but not causation of the damage. The anti-cholesterol myth has been long refuted and is easily researched on-line.
Raw milk has many immune factors if not destroyed by heat.
Raw milk is a great source of anti-oxidants by supporting our body’s production of the master anti-oxidant, glutathione, which is an amino acid. It is difficult to supplement with glutathione directly, usually not through digestion, but the precursor amino acid Cysteine can build it when combined with two other amino acids. Heat destroys cysteine so pasteurized dairy had no glutathione building.
Cysteine is abundant in whey protein, but almost all whey protein powders on the market are heated. The most preserved yet not actually raw is by far Vital Whey, which can be used in small quantities, not as protein replacement powder because it is so strong. Most people in the healing world, patients and practitioners alike, rarely talk about this amazing product, and this reflects the vast weakness of the entire field made worse by distractions from competing products that can’t measure up. Glutathione is considered crucial because it is one of the body’s ways of neutralizing toxins like heavy metals mercury and aluminum that can be very hard to remove and debilitating.
Most cheese labeled raw in the store is not really raw because they don’t define the raw temperature low enough.
Raw cheese has a unique property when eaten alone without other food it is not digested but absorbs toxins. It’s a great way to often stop nausea with just a sugar cube sized piece, repeated as needed. I know it’s not being digested and absorbed because it often works with people who are sulfur intolerant on an empty stomach, but bother them when they eat it with food that makes the body digest it with its sulfur and casein proteins.
WHERE TO GET RAW DAIRY
Raw diary is illegal in many places now due to germophobic pseudo science and politically driven public health hysteria. There is plenty to read about this online, so only the overview here.
Heating, known as pasteurization, is designed to kill foreign bacteria in milk that could lead to food poisoning. There is no evidence this protects us and we know that pasteurized dairy can harm us. Pasteurization does not preserve the milk forever and the bacteria that do grow will spoil the milk, unlike with raw milk where the bacteria in it can help protect it and grow into a healthy yogurt. Raw milk has its own protective bacterial and yeast ecology and as it ages that turns into a yogurt- like “clabbered milk” that is runnier but deliciously sour. This works better if not exposed too much to air that can introduce some foreign bacteria that will spoil the ferment. This has been done for thousands of years, since the beginning of agriculture.
In the USA, milk is legal in some states as a matter of degree that you can look-up at RealMilk.com.
Raw milk is available in vending machines in France. The French love dairy. The French know something about health because their medical system is considered best in world by conventional measures.
In countries where raw dairy is illegal, you can go to a farm directly or meet vendors in a farmer’s markets. You can search through local health networks for connections.
